New Year Luncheon

The Floral Park Historical Society will host its annual New Year Luncheon on Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013 at Duggan’s Restaurant in Floral Park.  Members and friends are invited. The festive buffet lunch, including appetizers, entrée, beverages and dessert is $30 per person. AARP Meeting

The AARP Village Chapter No. 5183 will be meeting from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Clinton Martin Park in New Hyde Park. New members are invited to come to the meeting and sign up. You must have a National AARP membership. 

Winthrop-University Hospital’s Free Mini-Med School

Attention adults: do you have an affinity for science and learning? Not doing much this winter?  If so, then come hear from experts from Winthrop-University Hospital as you learn how the body functions.
 Winthrop’s free Mini-Med School Adult Education program begins on Wednesday, Jan. 16 and will be offered for a total of five weekly sessions through Wednesday, Feb. 13. Topics and sessions include:

Jan. 16 – The Cardiovascular And Endocrine Systems

Jan. 23 – The Nervous And Musculoskeletal Systems

·Jan. 30 – The Reproductive And Gastrointestinal Systems

Feb. 6 –   Dermatology And Ophthalmology

·Feb. 13 – The Respiratory System And Preventative Medicine

Classes will be held from 7 – 9 p.m. in the Dr. Martin Spatz Conference Center, located in the lower level of the main Hospital at 259 First St. in Mineola. Admission is free but space is limited and registration is required. To register for one or more of the sessions, please call 516-663-2234.

Officer Installation 

The Greater New Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce will hold Gala Dinner and Chinese Auction coinciding with its Annual Installation of Directors and Officers Ceremony on Thursday, Jan. 17 at 6 p.m. at the Inn at New Hyde Park at 214 Jericho Turnpike. It’s $30 per person, which comes with a full dinner.

Lecture At Hofstra University

The Archeological Institute of America Lecture, Dr. Deborah Carlson will presents “The excavation of a Late Hellenistic Column Wreck at Kiilburun, Turkey” from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Public Room 105 Breslin Hall, Hofstra University. The remains of a ship carrying a marble column gives insight into the process of quarrying, transportation and monumental construction of the Greeks. Dr. Carlson is president of the Institute of Nautical Archaeology at Texas A & M University.

It’s time to highlight Elmont American Legion Post 1033 located in the impressive building on Hill Ave. Besides providing great Memorial Day parades, the post is involved in many programs that benefit the community. Thrift Shop

The thrift shop at the Floral Park United Methodist Church located at 35 Verbena Ave., is now open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays. There is a wide selection of household items, jewelry, antiques, clothing, as well as a Christmas room and Halloween decorations.

Clutterers Anonymous

Clutterers Anonymous (CLA), a 12-step self-help group, offers help and support to those who have clutter problems in their homes or workplace. Meets every Thursday from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, 265 Asbury Ave., in Westbury. There are no dues or fees. Free Breast Cancer Support Groups 

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer program is offering new support groups. There is no cost for any group; however pre-registration is required. Additional groups are formed upon request, including groups for men with breast cancer and family members. All groups meet at Adelphi University School of Social Work in Garden City. •Support group for women newly diagnosed with breast cancer will meet weekly for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m. 

•Support group for women post treatment will meet weekly for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m. 

•Support group for young women with breast cancer will meet weekly for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m. 

•Support group for women with metastatic breast cancer will meet weekly for eight weeks from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.

•A telephone support group for women with breast cancer will be held weekly for eight weeks from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

Monthly Cancer Support Group

Franklin Hospital’s cancer support group will meet on Monday, Jan. 7 at 2 p.m. in the former coffee shop at North Shore LIJ Franklin Hospital in Valley Stream. (Please note the new location for 2013.) The group regularly meets the first Monday of every month from 2 to 4 p.m. It is open to all cancer survivors, including family members and is ideal for people who need someone to talk to about the illness. Discussions include new medicines and treatments, advice on how to cope and also provides emotional support.
