Winter Wonder Lecture Series
Join Science Museum of Long Island Director John T. Tanacredi, Ph.D. will be hosting an exclusive screening of the BBC television program How to Grow a Planet, which premiered in the United Kingdom last winter, from 7 to 9 p.m. With spectacular footage shot on Long Island and throughout the world, the program explores the key role the plant kingdom has played in shaping the planet, revealing how grass transformed life in the oceans and triggered the development of human civilization; flowers sculpted the Earth and drove the evolution of all animals; and plants in general harnessed light and created a life-sustaining atmosphere. Science & Society Lecture Series

This slide show and discussion features SMLI’s Earth P.U.L.S.E (People Understanding & Learning About Science Through Education) expedition to Easter Island to explore the secrets of this southeast Pacific Polynesian island. Pregnancy Conference
Mercy Medical Center invites families planning to have children or are already expecting, to a day-long educational seminar. The 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. “Birth, Baby and Beyond” pregnancy conference will feature exhibits, workshops and presentations by physicians, nurses and staff addressing various aspects of childbirth, including labor, delivery, breast feeding and parenting. Workshop presentations will include information about mental health for the family before, during and after delivery; pain management during labor; basics of newborn care; and a Daddy Boot Camp that will provide tips and strategies for fathers. There is a registration fee of $10 per person or $15 per couple that includes continental breakfast and lunch along with free raffles, giveaways and door prizes. Creative Cups
The popular, life-affirming event of the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, is returning and people are invited to participate by becoming a sponsor. Submitted creations will be included in the auction/gala (to be held on March 14, 2013 at Adelphi University in Garden City). Folk Dance Classes
International folk dance classes for beginners and intermediates are offered on Tuesday mornings in February at the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island. Classes are from 9 to 11 a.m. and will feature dances from many different countries. The first class began on February 5. There is a suggested donation of $5 for each class. The Ethical Humanist Society is located at 38 Old Country Rd. in Garden City (at the western end of Old Country Road next to the large blue water tower). Garden City Library Movie Screenings
Friends of the Garden City Public Library invite resident adults to free movies on Mondays at 1:30 p.m., from January through April 2013 at the Garden City Public Library located at 60 Seventh St. Upcoming movie dates are: March 4, 11 & 18; April 1, 8, 15, 22 & 29. Pick up a copy of the movie flyer at the library. All movies are unrated. Movie titles are subject to change. Seating and parking is limited and on a first-come basis. No tickets are required. Breast Cancer Support
The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is offering a new support group for anyone who has done genetic testing and tested positive for breast cancer. The group will meet on Monday evenings from 7 to 8:30 p.m. for eight consecutive weeks, beginning on Feb. 25. There is no cost for the group; however pre-registration is required. Cancer Support Group
Franklin Hospital’s cancer support group meets in the former coffee shop at North Shore LIJ Franklin Hospital in Valley Stream. (Please note the new location for 2013.) The group regularly meets the first Monday of every month from 2 to 4 p.m. It is open to all cancer survivors, including family members and is ideal for people who need someone to talk to about the illness.
