Amy Palmiero-Winters of Hicksville has been named among the eight Town of Oyster Bay residents as one of this year’s Women of Distinction.
Palmiero-Winters is the founder of Amy’s One Step Ahead Foundation, an organization focused on helping children with physical disabilities build self-esteem and self-confidence through athletics. Her work with children to help teach them independence and responsibility, as well as how to handle challenges. Palmiero-Winters shares her love of volunteering with the children and mentors them to be role models for other children facing similar difficulties.
Palmiero-Winters’ lessons come from a place of true knowledge, as she herself has had to overcome disabling health struggles. A runner since age eight, participating in many running events, her ability to run, or even walk, was questioned when she herself became an amputee. That clearly didn’t stop Palmiero-Winters, who has completed many running events, many over 100 miles, including what is known as ‘the world’s toughest foot race,’ and holds 12 world records in various track events.
