TR Lecture
The Friends of Sagamore Hill hosts the Dr. John A. Gable Lecture Series, held in Christ Church Parish Hall, 61 East Main Street on Thursday, April 18, as Chip Bishop discusses his latest book The Lion and the Journalist, portraying the friendship of Theodore Roosevelt and his biographer Joseph Bucklin Bishop. The Thursday, May 16, lecture features photographer Xiomáro, draws on his experience photographing the interior of the Roosevelt home at Sagamore Hill, after removal of the house’s furnishings as part of the site’s rehabilitation project.Lectures begin at 7 p.m. Admission and refreshments are free to all. Operation Cleanup
Help the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Chamber of Commerce keep Our Town beautiful by joining Operation Cleanup on April 21. Volunteers meet at the Bandstand at 8 a.m. A light breakfast will be served. Lions Benefit
On Sunday, April 21, the Lions Club hosts y will be relaxing as they enjoy the fun and food at the 8th Annual Spring Benefit at the Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club. The event will honor Lion Jerry Mavros for his 50 years of service to the club. The club was chartered in 1948. The spring benefit is a great event that includes silent auction items, raffles and a 50/50. Come and enjoy an afternoon at the yacht club from 4 to 7 p.m. while benefiting the Lion’s charitable work. Reserve your tickets by calling 922-2967.
Dog Day at Sagamore
Dog Day at SHNHS (11 a.m. to 4 p.m.) is a nod to the many four legged friends the Roosevelts cared for at Sagamore Hill, but also in recognition to our dog-walkers who have continued to visit Sagamore Hill during the major rehabilitation at Theodore Roosevelt’s home. All friendly, well-behaved, leashed dogs are invited attend this FREE activity. Special guest Rick Caran along with “Team Jilli Dog” will be in attendance throughout the day. At 2 pm the Friends of Sagamore Hill will be hosting a series of fun contests, including best dog costume and best tricks. Opera Night
Founder Isabella Eredita Johnson brings her group of gifted musicians to perform arias from some of the most beloved operas, as well as art songs of Schubert, Wolf, Liszt and Schumann on April 21, at 4 p.m. at Christ Church. Preservation Workshop
Learn about recording oral family histories at a workshop at the Oyster Bay Historical Society on April 25 at 6:30 p.m. These workshops are growing in popularity so please call 922-5032 to reserve your space. Presenter Nicole Menchise, archivist will be discussing the technical issues of: how to get started; and how to preserve what you already have; taking a cassette tape to convert to an mp3 with the use of free software. Arbor day Florida and Louisiana celebrate Arbor day in January; Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi celebrate it in February; Arkansas, Califoria, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Tennessee in March. In April 35 states celebrate along with us including the District of Columbia. In May its Alaska, Main, North Dakota and Vermont’s time. September is the Virgin Islands’ choice; November is Guam and Hawaii’s and December is South Carolina’s. NYS celebrates on the last Friday of April, the 26th.

Hamlet Cleanup
The OB-EN Chamber of Commerce holds its annual sidewalk cleanup as it fills the planters with flowers. Youth are invited to come and earn community service hours. The day starts at 8 a.m. Call 922-6464 for information.
Harbor Cleanup
The Friends of the Bay holds its annual harbor cleanup on April 27. Herb Garden Workshop
Alex Sutherland, Raynham Hall Museum director of education and public programs will host a Victorian herb garden workshop for adults and children on April 27. “We have a cold frame and over Easter weekend we will plant some Victorian herb seeds ourselves. By then they will have grown enough to be planted outside in our herb garden.” The workshop is for parents and children to learn about the herbs used in Victorian times as medicines and in cooking; and to plant them outside in the museum’s herb garden. The LI Junior Rowing Championships take place on May 5 at Centre Island Beach. The Oyster Bay-East Norwich board of education will hold a public hearing on the 2013-2014 Budget on May 7 at 8 p.m. in the Oyster Bay High School library. Joint Forum on Shore Road
The East Norwich and Oyster Bay Civic Associations meet May 16 for an open forum on Shore Road. Rosemarie Colvin has arranged for Michael Martino, press secretary of the NC DPW and Donna Boyle, NC public works project engineer, including for Shore Road: to discuss the endeavor and answer questions about safety. “There is nowhere to pull off the road in an emergency,” said Colvin. It will be held at the Italian American Citizens Club at 48 Summit Street at 7:30 p.m. There are some bright spots, the county is burying the telephone lines, working on better drainage and there may be a walkway emerging as the work is completed. Learn Model Railroading
Planting Fields presents a Trackside Workshop: Making a Model Train Layout with the trainmaster of Babylon Model Railroading Club on May 18 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Manor House.
