Youngsters ages 8 through 13 are cordially invited to participate in a Youth Training Program for budding triathletes.
The program is being organized by the Greater Long Island Running Club under the auspices of the Town of Oyster Bay Parks Department.
The program will start with a training seminar in early June. Following the seminar, there will be a series of eight weekend sessions to be held each Saturday afternoon 4 to 6 p.m., beginning on June 29 and running through Aug. 17. All sessions will be held at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay and consist of instruction of all three elements of the triathlon – swimming, biking and running.
While participating, the youngsters will learn correct form in running, biking and swimming, proper nutrition, hydration, proper footwear, apparel, bike accessories, etc. and the importance of training in an educational and fun setting. The program will culminate with the participation of the student athletes in the annual “Town of Oyster Bay Junior Triathlon” on Aug. 25.
A program of this nature for the 8-13 age group is unique, especially with a goal of getting the children ready for an actual race at the culmination of the program.
The fee for each child who registers is $25 for the entire program. Registration is now open at www.glirc.org, or call Mike or Linda at the running club office for hard copy applications or more information.
