The streets of Oyster Bay were full with enthusiastic supporters of the Oyster Bay High School PTSA, coming out in force to enjoy a Taste of the Town. This was the first annual Taste of the Town — Restaurant Stroll, and, judging by the crowds and the happy smiles in evidence all evening, it will be the first of many successful events.
This event, previously known as the Taste of the Gold Coast, had been held in catering facilities. This year, the committee felt strongly that they wanted to support the local restaurants and businesses that were impacted by Hurricane Sandy. The local restaurants and businesses are very generous to the community, whether to the PTSA, sports clubs or local nonprofits. The Chamber of Commerce enthusiastically supported the idea, and a wonderful concept came to life.
Attendees registered at Oakcliff Sailing Center, and were given a list of participating restaurants and merchants. Everyone was given a passport, which was stamped at the participating restaurants. Those who returned the passport were eligible to win a classic Adirondack chair, donated by Dodds and Eder. Students from Oyster Bay High School were on hand to help direct everyone, provide music, and just generally lend a hand wherever needed.
Dodds and Eder set up a tented lounge on South Street for tastings from caterers or restaurants that are not located in downtown Oyster Bay. It was a great place to sample foods and wines, and relax for a bit. The Oyster Bay Brewing Company was another popular destination. There was a great deal of excitement and interest in having a home- grown brewery. Taste of the Town attendees gave great reviews of the beer that was available for sampling that evening. The beers will be available soon at local restaurants and distributors.
All the money raised at the Taste of the Town stroll will go to support the cultural arts program at Oyster Bay High School and will provide scholarships for students in the areas of academics, arts, theatre, music, athletics, citizenship and special education. These are important programs, and worthy of the community’s support. Congratulations are due to the Taste of the Town Committee for putting together such a wonderful event, and to the members of the chamber for its support. This year’s event sold out quickly, so be sure to purchase your tickets early next year!
