The 24 students who are involved in the SAIL program, which meets before school on a regular basis, have discussed a number of proposals including graffiti removal and parking regulations. Recently, one of their proposals, a “Children At Play” sign on Madison Street in Elmont came to fruition. At the students’ request, the warning device was installed on March 19, 2013.
“Hempstead Town is proud to work with these intelligent and thoughtful students every year,” said Supervisor Murray. “They found some things in their community that they wanted to see changed and used their knowledge to work through the governmental process until they were successful in effecting a change.”
group’s latest proposal, changing a two-way stop at the intersection of Dauntless Parkway and Stuyvesant Street to a four-way stop, requires town board legislation. The students presented their proposal at the April 23 Town Board meeting.
The measure was approved unanimously and will be sent to Albany for approval. Once that approval is received the Town’s Traffic Control Division will install the signs, making the eastbound and westbound portion of the intersection a full stop. In addition, all four stop signs at the intersection will bear “All Way Stop” placards.
“We were proud to have the SAIL students’ present their proposal to us at Tuesday’s meeting,” said Councilman Ambrosino. “They have some thought-provoking ideas and they presented a sound case for the need for the additional stop signs.”
“Councilman Ambrosino and I would like to congratulate the Sewanhaka SAIL program for their accomplishments,” said Supervisor Murray. “These are the type of young adults that we will see serving on town board one day.”
