It was a glorious sunny afternoon last month when the Garden City Pool was host to the Garden City Pool Swim Across America fundraiser. Swimmers old and young swam as much or as little as they liked and raised almost $13,000 to fight cancer. Swim Across America, Inc., [SAA] is a national organization that focuses on local cancer centers and hospitals and is dedicated to raising money and awareness for cancer research, prevention and treatment through swimming related events. Beneficiaries of the Garden City Swim Across America fundraiser include the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center; the Cold Spring Harbor Lab; the SAA Stacey Leondis Fellowship at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore; the Feinstein Institute of North Shore- LIJ; the MIRACLE Foundation Pavilion at Mercy Medical Center and the Fighting Chance center on Long Island.
The Garden City Pool event featured food donated by My Three Sons and Manor Deli and balloons provided by Balloon Brothers and the DeGearo family. Every participant was entered into raffle drawings for prizes donated by local businesses: Leo’s Restaurant; TCBY; The Seventh Street Deli; The Burger Spot; The Pear Tree; as well as Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts located on Seventh Street in Garden City. Further donations were supplied by the NY Giants; the NY Jets; the Brooklyn Nets; the Germano family and Heaney family. The Zarriello family even donated an iPad mini. The Garden City Pool Swim Across America committee would like to thankthese businesses and families for their generosity and support. Be sure to watch for information about next year’s fundraiser.
