Jean Bohan of Oyster Bay and Maggie Reid and Jeri Cavagnaro, of Locust Valley, each won awards in the 30th annual Runner’s Edge Long Island Women’s Run on July 13, as a strong field of 439 runners, walkers and wheelchair athletes crossed the finish line on the track at Farmingdale High School.
Reid earned fourth place honors in the 15-19 age group, with a finishing time of 21:46. Bohan scored as the third finisher in the 40-44 age group with a time of 22:03. Cavagnaro was the fifth place finisher in the 65-69 age group with a time of 32:30.
The heat and humidity certainly played their role this year, but the earlier starting time of 8:30 a.m. took a bit of the edge off, and the ice cream, watermelon, and the sinful pastries donated by All Round Foods at the finish line made everyone forget how tough the run might have been.
The Runner’s Edge running and multisport specialty store served as the title sponsor once again, and the matrimonial law firm of Mejias Milgrim and Alvarado returned as the presenting sponsor. Randi Milgrim of Old Bethpage, a partner in Mejias, Milgrim Alvarado, had an especially strong race, easily her best Women’s Run ever in 31:49. Danny Kulchinsky and Mayfair Diamonds and Fine Jewelry also returned as a Presenting sponsor, and Bunny Dobkin was the lucky winner of a $2,000 retail value pair of diamond earrings generously donated by Danny as the Grand Prize in the post-Run raffle.
Several public officials were on hand to support the event: New York State Assemblyman Michael Montesano, Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joe Pinto, and Nassau County Legislators Michael Venditto and Rose Marie Walker.
The proceeds of this year’s run will once again be distributed to The Open Word, a special program administered by the Dominican Sisters that provides education and job training to poor uneducated women in Huntington Station, Amityville and Wyandanch.
“Our thanks to our local friends and neighbors for supporting this most important event,” stated Race Director Debbie Blair of the greater Long Island Running Club. “We are thrilled that several local athletes won awards, and offer our congratulations to Maggie, Jean and Jeri.”
