Main Street Mile Set For Labor Day Weekend

The ninth annual “Main Street Mile” will take place on Saturday, Aug. 31, beginning at 9 a.m. (kid’s fun run at 8:30 a.m.) on Main Street in Farmingdale. The event is held in memory of a long-time fixture at Long Island road races — John McManus. Families and recreational runners are encouraged to join elite participants in the event that will benefit Pat LaFontaine’s Companions in Courage Foundation (www.CiC16.org).

LaFontaine said, “This is a great way for families to kick off the Labor Day weekend. I am looking forward to seeing Long Island come together for such a great cause.” The hockey hall-of-famer’s foundation builds interactive game rooms in children’s hospitals. Their most recent room opened at Cohen Children’s Hospital at North Shore-LIJ in April.

The Main Street Mile offers prizes to the top male and female athletes in various age groups and runners of all abilities are welcomed. The course records are held by Dustin Ermani at 4:10 and by Leonora Petrina at 4:44. Post-race awards and a raffle will be conducted at Croxley Ale House on Main Street in Farmingdale. Frank Brinka from B103 radio will be on hand to interview the winners and the celebrities. A kids’ fun run, a ¼-mile race, will also be held in conjunction with the event.

Registration is $18 per person (online registration closes on Aug. 29 at midnight), and $5 for the kids’ run. Online registrations are being accepted at www.active.com/event_detail.cfm?event_id=2096056. Day of race registration will also be available on race morning. The fee on race morning for onsite registration is $25.

The event is being presented by The Runner’s Edge, Long Island’s premier running and multi-sport shop, and a Main Street – Farmingdale merchant. Major sponsors for the event include Cisco, Dr. Larry Lembo, The BullDog Law Group, and Carter, DeLuca, Farrell and Schmidt.
