Junior Triathlon Training Program

The Town of Oyster Bay and the Greater Long Island Running Club teamed up to conduct an exciting program for young athletes this summer: the inaugural Runner’s Edge-TOBAY Junior Triathlon Training Program.

Seventy local youngsters, ages eight through 13, signed up for this eight-week program, which began in late June and will ends in late August, leading to the participation of these youngsters in the Runner’s Edge-TOBAY Junior Triathlon on Sunday, August 25. All sessions are held on Saturday afternoons at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay.

Head coach Debbie Blair, swim coaches Barbara Cronin Stagnari, Nancy Lipira and Lorraine Huether, bike coach Bob Cook, and run coaches Joe Picini and Ed Melnik, with an assist from administrative coordinator Mindy Davidson and her daughter Jessy, trained the youngsters in each of the three triathlon sports and provided insight into transitioning between the three.

“We are very happy that the Town of Oyster Bay has offered us the opportunity to conduct this innovative program for local youngsters,” Blair said.  “In an era when childhood obesity has become endemic, it is wonderful to find a local municipality that supports youth programs like this one.”
