Karen Massaro is ready to close the books on teaching. She has dedicated 32 years to the Hicksville School District, where she served as a music teacher.
Massaro has taught at several schools during her tenure in the district. She taught at East Street Elementary School for 13 years, Woodland Elementary School for 10 years, Lee Avenue Elementary School for 12 years and Dutch Lane Elementary School for seven years. Splitting her time in between schools for many years was no easy task.
While she didn’t have a favorite year, Massaro recalls her time at Lee Avenue School, which she attended when she was a child. She had the privilege of working with teachers who taught her. Eventually, she was able to step into the shoes of the teacher who had giving her the inspiration to become a music teacher.
“I’m going to miss giving students the joy of music,” said Massaro. “I want them to have fun while learning about it.”
Her plans are to continue teaching private voice lessons. However, she also wants to spend more time traveling, reading and being with her family. Massaro realizes that it is important to “make sure you pursue and do what you love for your career.”
She believes it’s, “the only way you’re going to be happy with it.”
