With all the great moments that accompany high school athletics, unfortunately injuries can happen. Winthrop-University Hospital has created a Saturday Sports Injury Clinic primarily geared at providing game day care to high school and middle school athletes. It is the first program of this nature on Long Island.
At Winthrop, sports medicine physicians from Winthrop’s leading Orthopaedic Surgery team, including Bradley Wasserman, M.D., and Mark Grossman, M.D., chief of the Division of Sports Medicine at Winthrop, are available each Saturday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Winthrop’s Pediatric Emergency Room, located at 259 First Street in Mineola, to evaluate and treat student athletes who have been injured.
“Student athletes who are injured during a Saturday game should not have to wait until Monday to see a doctor,” said James Capozzi, M.D., chairman of the Department of
Orthopedic Surgery at Winthrop. “The service is a great opportunity to be seen by a knowledgeable sports medicine physician and have your issue treated quickly. Students have sustained serious injuries including fractures and dislocations. Our orthopedic experts are available to student athletes on Saturdays. This can be very reassuring for the parents too.”
