Best Wishes To Our College Bound Students
Throughout the next two to three weeks, many of our young people will be leaving for college. Some for the first time; others to conclude course requirements which will lead to undergraduate and graduate degrees. My colleagues on the Village Board join me in wishing them a safe journey and a most productive year. We are very proud of the accomplishments of our young people and look to them as our ambassadors to the many cities, towns and villages throughout the country which will be their temporary homes.
Welcome Adelphi Students
Next week will mark the arrival of Adelphi’s Class of 2017 onto the Garden City campus. It gives me pleasure to welcome the students and to compliment them on choosing Adelphi. The board of trustees and I wish President Scott, his faculty and staff as well as the Class of 2017 and all students a most productive year.
The village wants you to consider Garden City your home away from home during the next four years. While it is my hope that you will never require medical assistance during your stay at Adelphi, it is good to know that Garden City is the home to virtually every medical and dental discipline available and they are centered at 520 and 601 Franklin Ave. and on Seventh Street. We also invite you to visit our shopping areas and many fine restaurants on Seventh Street, Franklin Avenue and New Hyde Park Road; bring your friends and family, all are welcome.
New Initiative For Seventh Street – Friday Night Promenade
This program began last month and I am looking forward to seeing many residents and visitors as we continue to close Seventh Street, between Franklin and Hilton Avenues, each Friday evening, so that everyone can continue to enjoy the outdoor dining and live entertainment offered by local restaurants as well as shopping in the stores and shops who will remain open during the evening. I hope that you will make it a point to bring your family out to see all that is offered each Friday evening in the village.

The residents of Garden City are very fortunate to have viable retail businesses on Seventh Street, Franklin Avenue and New Hyde Park Road where there is a good variety of quality merchandise and family dining experiences available to be enjoyed. Please support these businesses and enjoy the products, variety and outstanding customer service. Keep in mind that these merchants save you from traveling outside the village for your needs. Consider the harsh reality if we did not have these businesses here to service our needs. I look forward to seeing everyone in town.
In Preparation For Hurricane Season
I was recently reviewing a publication that was sent to the village by Nassau County on the subject of hurricane readiness. While the Incorporated Village of Garden City subscribes to an emergency weather service and carefully monitors regional storm activity, in preparation for implementing its storm emergency plan, there is a lot that residents can and should do to make preparations for the upcoming hurricane season. In this and succeeding columns I will share information so that you can be prepared in the event that a major storm hits Long Island. In addition to the concern for your own safety and the safety of your family, please keep in mind those neighbors who are elderly, sick or alone who may be in need of assistance.
It is suggested that you prepare an “Emergency Go-Kit” which will include the following items:
•First Aid Kit (pack a “how to” guide as well.)
•Essential prescription and nonprescription items and medical information.
•Battery-powered flashlight and radio (or crank radio), extra batteries and a 12 hour glow stick.
•A change of clothes, plus rain wear, sturdy shoes and protective gloves for everyone.
•Personal items, i.e., eyeglasses, cash in small bills.
•Important documents in a waterproof container; drivers’ licenses, wills, birth/marriage certificates, insurance policies, deed or lease, recent tax returns, credit card and bank account numbers, social security cards, passport and home inventory list.
•Special items for infants, elderly, pets, or loved ones with special needs.
Please also be aware that Garden City High School is a Red Cross Shelter and the high school may open at the discretion of the Office of Emergency Management.
Board Of Trustees’ Meeting Schedule
The next meeting of the board of trustees will be on Thursday, Sept. 19 at 8 p.m. I encourage all residents to attend board of trustees meetings so as to be thoroughly informed of village issues from a first-hand perspective.
