Declutter Your Stuff, Declutter Your Life

Friends of the Garden City Public Library will sponsor a free one-hour lecture with Dr. Duffy Spencer, social psychologist and image relationship therapist at 2 p.m. at The Garden City Public Library. 

Are you a clutterholic? Are you overwhelmed by too much junk? Do you keep “things” for comfort… & then become uncomfortable with your piles of clutter? Is “stuff’ getting in your way of being the person you want to be… & having the life you want? Whether it’s physical clutter or emotional clutter, this seminar will cover the reasons why we clutter, the emotional process of letting go & the rewards we reap from getting rid of those things that no longer serve us.

A Rodgers & Hart Audition

Friends of the Garden City Public Library will sponsor a free one-hour musical comedy A Rodgers & Hart Audition” written and directed by David Houston. It’s 1940, and the world-famous song-writing team prepares a benefit for our besieged friends across the Atlantic. Unlikely celebrities audition and sing such Rodgers & Hart classics as “I Could Write a Book,” “Johnny One-Note,” “Manhattan,” “Isn’t It Romantic,” “Where Or When” and lots more. Performers will be: David Houston as Richard Rodgers, Rick Heuthe as Lorenz Hart; Melanie Lipton, Steve Corbellini, and Gail Merzer-Behrens take turns in costume as famous personalities of the day. The show will begin at 2 p.m. at the Garden City Public Library located at 60 Seventh St., in Garden City. Seating and parking is limited and on a first-come basis. No tickets are required. Oktoberfest 2013

The Second Annual Oktoberfest at Resurrection Lutheran Church from 4 to 10:30 p.m. There will be activities for children and families during the afternoon, including games, fall festivities, German music, German food and soft drinks. Starting at 7, thefocus moves to adults with authentic Oktoberfest music provided by The Luchow Quartet. German food continues through the evening, imported German beer and wine may be purchased separately. Free commemorative mug. Net proceeds support the missions of Resurrection. Event will take place under a tent on the church lawn along Emmet Place by the entrance to the church on 420 Stewart Ave. Advance tickets are $25; $10, age 12 and under (children 3 and under free) through Sept. 28. Monthly Cancer Support Group

Franklin Hospital’s cancer support group meets in the former coffee shop at North Shore LIJ Franklin Hospital in Valley Stream. (Please note the new location for 2013.) The group regularly meets the first Monday of every month from 2 to 4 p.m. It is open to all cancer survivors, including family members and is ideal for people who need someone to talk to about the illness. Discussions include new medicines and treatments, advice on how to cope and also provides emotional support. Additional information about the monthly meetings, or those seeking assistance and information concerning cancer are urged to contact group advisors Anna Rossetti at 516-256-6025 or Meg Wehrum, RN at 516-256-6478.

Free Breast Cancer Support Groups 

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer program is offering new support groups. There is no cost for any group; however pre-registration is required. Additional groups are formed upon request, including groups for men with breast cancer and family members. All groups meet at Adelphi University School of Social Work in Garden City. •Support group for women newly diagnosed with breast cancer will meet weekly for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m. 

 

•Support group for women post treatment will meet weekly for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m. 

 

•Support group for young women with breast cancer will meet weekly for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m. 

 

•Support group for women with metastatic breast cancer will meet weekly for eight weeks from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.

 

•A telephone support group for women with breast cancer will be held weekly for eight weeks from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
