Comets Win 1-0 Against Calhoun

Boys Soccer Advances To Semi-Finals

One goal.

That’s all it took for the Hicksville High School boys soccer team to advance to the semi finals last Wednesday, as Hicksville’s Matt Sloan delivered a clear-cut pass to TJ Kilmetis, who knocked in the game-winning goal with just minutes remaining in the hotly contested match against Calhoun.

“Last time we faced Calhoun, we lost 2-1.  I feel that we are a much better team now than what we were then,” said Coach Scott Starkey moments before the match. His words proved that the Comets had improved since their home opener versus Calhoun.

The Hicksville Comets played with great resilience in the first half.  Calhoun held most of the possession during the first 20 minutes of the match.  They also got several shots at the goal from a few corner kick crosses and free kick attempts.  But on every possession they could not lead the ball past the goal line, due to the remarkable performance from sophomore goalkeeper, Nicholas Rodriguez with nine saves.

Afterward, Hicksville gained momentum and possession for the most part of the match. The game remained a scoreless draw until freshman Matt Sloan made a beautiful through-ball pass to forward and leading goalscorer, TJ Kilmetis.

Kilmetis found the back of the net with a brilliant game-winning goal in the 78th minute.

Hicksville High School’s boys soccer team already had a great season with their impressive record of 10-2-2 and ranked first in the Conference AA-2.  The team faced off against Syosset High School on Sunday, Nov. 3 in the Class AA semi final match at Mitchell Field, but lost 2-1.
