Book Sale
A bargain book sale will be held on from 9:30 a.m.–4 p.m. at the Garden City Public Library located at the corner of 60 Seventh St. and Hilton Ave. in Garden City. Come early for the best selection of hard and soft cover books. Just in time for the holidays will be great gift books and beautiful Christmas books as well as fiction, non-fiction, and children’s books. Friends of the Garden City Public Library will sponsor this sale with all proceeds to benefit the library. Book Discussion
Two of Adriana Trigiani’s Big Stone Gap novels, Big Stone Gap and Big Cherry Holler will be the selections for The Friends of The Garden City Public Library book discussion to be held on at 10 a.m. Gloria Weinrich will moderate this book discussion that will take place in the library’s small meeting room on the Lower Level and is limited to 20 participants. No registration is necessary. Copies of the book are available at the reference desk in the library. Ave Maria Mulligan, a 35-year-old self-proclaimed spinster who lives in the small town Big Stone Gap, discovers a skeleton in her family’s formerly tidy closet that completely unravels her quiet, conventional life. In Big Stone Gap, Ave Maria is suddenly fielding marriage proposals and planning the trip of a lifetime to Italy. In Big Cherry Holler, her story continues eight years later when her marriage is at a crossroads and she is faced with the decision of a lifetime. Adriana Trigiani’s novels are full of humor, romance, wisdom, and drama.
Irish Society Meeting
John Ridge, president of the New York Irish History Roundtable, will be giving a presentation on the Irish neighborhoods, or colonies, of Old New York. The wave os Irish immigration that came to metropolitan New York in the 19th and 20th centuries resulted in the establishment of dozens of solidly Irish neighborhoods, many of them predominantly settled by newcomers from a particular county in Ireland. There were Kerry, Cork, Donegal and Tyrone settlements and many others that thrived in Old New York. These compact neighborhoods, which were virtual “little Irelands,” developed because of Old Country family and county connections and stood apart from other Irish areas of the city. Ridge’s talk traces the conflicts in New York because some of the Irish county groups and the role that competition for jobs, social and language differences and even the struggle for political power played in dividing the Irish. A series of illustrations will highlight the legacy of this unique period in the history of the Irish in Greater New York. The meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Garden City Library, 60 Seventh St. across the street from the Garden City Hotel. The meeting is free and open to the public.

Title Swap
The next meeting of the Garden City Public Library’s reader’s advisory series “Title Swap with the Librarians” will be held from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. on the lower level of the library. Title Swap is a series of programs that gives patrons and librarians the opportunity to share new book titles and briefly discuss them. Attendees may bring lunch and will be served a beverage by library staffers. Ann Garnett with questions about the program. This program is open to all adult Garden City Public Library cardholders. Nassau Community College Thanksgiving Blood Drive
Nassau Community College (NCC), in conjunction with the Nassau University Medical Center, will be hosting a blood drive from 9a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the College Center Building in the hopes of suppling a substantial percentage of the area’s ongoing need for blood products. The drive also reflects the college’s six times a year effort to encourage all able individuals to participate in this vital activity. Dr. Arthur Friedman, co-Chair of the NCC Blood Drive Task Force, states, “Through our educational efforts to increase the number of blood donors, and our own contributions, the College hopes we will help meet a substantial level of the community’s blood needs. We look forward to working in partnership with community residents in this much needed blood drive.”
Make an appointment to give blood by calling Dr. Friedman at 516-572-7401 or Barbara Vollmer at 516-572-7883, or just stop in and say, “I want to be a blood donor.” The donation process takes less than an hour and refreshments will be served to participants. NCC’s Thanksgiving blood drive is sponsored by the Phi Theta Kappa honor society (evening division), the Engineering Society of Nassau Community College and the Society of Women Engineers.
Blood donors must be at least 17 years old and in good health. Donors should come with some photo identification. Although small snacks will be provided, participants are asked to eat before donating.

Mozart’s Requiem
The Waldorf Choral Society’s 40th Anniversary concert will feature soloists, chorus and orchestra along with George V. Rose conducting his final performance before retiring. Furniture Needed
The A.T.Stewart Exchange Consignment Shop at 109 Eleventh St. in Garden City is looking for furniture to add to its inventory. The shop can use cocktail tables, end tables, consoles, chairs of all types, dressers, dining room tables, breakfronts, servers, secretaries, mirrors, etc….it’s all in demand. If you have a particularly large piece, take a picture and show it to Maryann Caterino at the shop (516-746-8900). Consignees are paid 50 percent of the selling price. There is ample parking and the shop is conveniently located on the lower level of The Garden City Historical Society Museum. All proceeds from the A.T.Stewart Consignment Shop go towards the maintenance and upkeep of the Garden City Historical Society Museum, an original 1872 A.T.Stewart era Apostle Victorian structure.

Clutterers Anonymous
Clutterers Anonymous (CLA), a 12-step self-help group, offers help and support to those who have clutter problems in their homes or workplace. Meets every Thursday from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, 265 Asbury Ave., in Westbury. There are no dues or fees. Monthly Cancer Support Group
Franklin Hospital’s cancer support group meets in the former coffee shop at North Shore LIJ Franklin Hospital in Valley Stream. The group regularly meets the first Monday of every month from 2 to 4 p.m. It is open to all cancer survivors, including family members and is ideal for people who need someone to talk to about the illness. Discussions include new medicines and treatments, advice on how to cope and also provides emotional support. Free Breast Cancer Support Groups
The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer program is offering new support groups. There is no cost for any group; however pre-registration is required. Additional groups are formed upon request, including groups for men with breast cancer and family members. All groups meet at Adelphi University School of Social Work in Garden City. •Support group for women with metastatic breast cancer will meet weekly for eight weeks from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.
•A telephone support group for women with breast cancer will be held weekly for eight weeks from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
Volunteers Sought For Breast Cancer Program
If you’ve had breast cancer and want to pay it forward become a hotline volunteer. Women and men who are breast cancer survivors and others who are concerned about breast health issues can become volunteers at the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program in Garden City. Volunteers can help by doing fundraising and publicity, as well as by answering hotline calls. Hotline volunteers provide emotional support, information and referral services to callers with breast health concerns. Although the program is housed on Long Island, hotline services and telephone counseling are available to callers throughout New York State.
