Common Core And The Holidays

Recently a number of our parents, teachers and administrators attended a forum with the commissioner and the chancellor of the New York State Department of Education at Mineola High School to discuss issues such as the implementation of the Common Core, APPR, the testing requirements and student privacy. All who were selected to ask questions were passionate, articulate and professional. We still hope the department will take our concerns into consideration and work to improve the current status of the plan. In the meantime, the New Hyde Park-Garden City Park School District is committed to our clients, our students in continuing their education. Our district is fully committed to providing our students with the necessary inquiry skills, literacy and numeracy strategies and skills to navigate challenging text, both fiction and non-fiction, and to expose them to content area concepts so they can move forward to their secondary educational experience with an excellent foundation and strong background knowledge.

During this holiday season, I am filled with awe by the fact that our schools do so much more than just address academics in the cognitive realm. I am inspired and proud of the fact that our students are drawn to the service of others, and are well-rounded caring students, who serve others through various philanthropic activities. Many schools are currently raising funds or providing goods/services in the form of food drives, money for the Philippines, Toys for Tots, mittens, hats and scarf trees, Ronald McDonald donations, St. Jude, Jump-A-Thons and various other service projects facilitated by our student government. Our teachers, administrators and support staff equally give of their time and money by supporting breast cancer walks, Thanksgiving meals and holiday gifts for needy school families and just providing daily assistance to our students and families who need assistance.

We are a team, a community of educators and students, who have a goal of being educated or providing education in all facets of life.
