More than 150 boys from the Church of St. Mary CYO Travel Program attended the Hofstra vs. Sacred Heart University Men’s NCAA Division 1 Basketball game. Besides an outstanding college game, our sixth-grade boys took the court at halftime to show the college kids how it’s done. Thanks to Josh Mulholland and Jack Donahue for organizing this exciting event.
St. Mary’s fourth-grade basketball Kolin/Rubin/Chen team beat Garden City in a last-second nail-bitter, 24-23.
The team had outstanding play on both sides of the ball, showing offensive and defensive tenacity and hustle.
Joey Terenzi and Michael Mastando led in scoring, followed by Ryan Kolin, Donovan Barcelona, Noah Rubin, Nate Chen, Jake Moss and Zak Klusky. Outstanding defensive effort by Alex Mlotkowski and Sambhav Jain.
St Mary’s fifth-grade boys (Donahue/Connor) improved to 4-0 this weekend with a pair of wins over St. Joseph’s and St Raphael’s. A balanced attack put every player in the scorebook against St Joe’s, led by 8 points from John Donahue and Alex Papadakos, a pair of 4’s from Stefanos Kapetanos and Stephen Pidedjian, and a couple of long range hoops from Aidan Hill and Josh DeLeeuw. Jack McKusker chipped in for 5 points and controlled the boards with 8 rebounds. Sunday’s victory was keyed by Rory Connor’s point play (6 points/6 assist) and a season high from Colin Kuester (13pts).
St. Mary’s fourth-grade Koch improved their record to 3-0 with a 36 to 29 win over St. Peter’s of Port Washington. The team got out to a first quarter 7-0 lead with the help of 4 points and three rebounds by Peter Murphy. They held on for the win with the consistent scoring of Max McCarthy (19 points) and Will Cargiulo’s eight fourth-quarter points (12 in total). Colin Langton, with several steals, and Brian Finlay helped spread the St. Peter’s defense with good outside shooting.
St. Mary’s seventh-grade Dons/Newton/Holden team recorded its first victory of the season— a 27–21 road victory against Corpus Christi parish in Mineola—bringing the team’s record to 1–1. A suffocating man-to-man defense that featured timely steals down the stretch and limited the opponents to one shot per trip down the court was key to the victory. All eight players who dressed for the game scored at least one basket. Michael Fratello led the St. Mary scoring with 11 points.
St. Mary’s eighth-grade team Prestamo/Cullather notched their first win 41–33 over Our Lady of Lourdes. Robert Lunetta and Spencer Kaye both hit two 3- pointers. Christian Cullather and Devin Kennedy kept the momentum going by scoring 6 points each & Peter Spampinato played solid defense. Joe Notaro led the scoring with 9 points. This first win of the season was an entire team effort!
St.Mary’s seventh-grade team 7 defeated Jericho 53-44 and Half Hollow Hills West 64-33. Duncan Barcelona, Chris Themelis, Timmy Kiggins, Steven Salerno, Chris Glynn, Steven Vlahakis, Joseph Mulholland and Charlie Young work hard to keep it together until Patrick Weber returns from the DL.
The St. Mary’s seventh-grade Tsartsalis/Runac/Barry team’s record dropped to 1-2 after they lost to an undefeated Cure of Ars, Merrick (3-0) squad at home, 49-34. St. Mary’s had three players score in double-digits, with Stelio Katopodis leading the team with 12 points. Nicholas Barry and J.P. Aliprantis each scored 10 points. Michael Runac made a long jump shot to account for St. Marys’ two other points. St. Mary’s also received strong rebounding from Matt Abrankian and Ryan Sullivan and benefited from the play-making skills of Leo Tsartsalis and Michael Polis.
St. Mary’s seventh-grade Chellaram/McNulty team has won its second game in a row with a 33-15 victory over St. Boniface of Sea Cliff. It was a very balanced offensive effort with every player scoring. The team was led by Chris Alcarez with 7 points, Will Allen (5 pts), Dino Chellaram (6pts), and Jared Gentile (4pts). Matthew Cozzi (2pts), Kyle Grant (1pt), Ryan Healy (2pts), Matthew Pegno (2pts), and Demetri McNulty (2pts) put in a great performance on both ends of the floor. The highlight of the game was a long range basket by Chris Lee (2pts).
