The Hicksville girls basketball team mounted a dramatic fourth quarter comeback attempt, but it fell short as they were defeated 36-27 last week to Farmingdale.
The game featured outstanding defense on both ends, forcing teams to commit a multitude of turnovers stemming from both errant passes and backcourt violations. For much of the game, Hicksville consistently committed costly turnovers, trailing 22-6 at halftime. In the fourth quarter, however, the tables were turned and the team mounted a comeback on the strength of an 18-5 run.
“We definitely did a good job of turning it around in the second half,” said Assistant Coach Erin Breen. “The first half just wasn’t good enough. We were turning the ball over; there was a lack of focus. We were looking for some of the girls to step it up.”
Jillian Wynne was the player who stepped up the production on offense, by scoring a team-high eight points and hitting two clutch three-pointers to cut the deficit within 10. On defense, it was sophomore Tamara Hansen who played a pivotal role in her first varsity game. Hansen was a tremendous presence in the post, coming up with big rebounds and blocked shots, which gave the Comets an opportunity to come back.
“She did an outstanding job,” said Breen. “We weren’t sure if we were going to get her in this game but we needed her and she will definitely be seeing more playing time.”
