Nassau BOCES, 3DPrintingedu.com and the Long Island Arts Alliance will host Dutch artist Michiel Van Der Kley, who will demonstrate one of the largest 3D printing projects to date on Jan. 31 at Long Island High School for the Arts in Syosset.
The event, which is free and open to the public, will feature Project Egg, a 3D building (5 x 4 x 3 meters) being constructed of 4,760 unique stones printed by contributing artists from around the world.
During the presentation, the artist, who is also a furniture designer, will demonstrate how each piece of Project EGG is being created. Since the stones take approximately 12 hours to print, one will be in progress at the start of the demo.
Everyone with an appropriate desktop 3D printer is invited to print one “stone.” The .stl files can be downloaded free of charge from Van Der Kley’s website http://projectegg.org/project-egg/. The stones are built entirely with Rhino and Grasshopper software.
“This way, the printing community can be seen as a kind of a new and widely spread global collaborative factory,” said Peter Suchmann, of 3DPrinteringedu.com, a Long Island Educational consulting firm.
Project Egg will be unveiled at Milan’s International Furniture Fair in April 2014. The artist intends to take the “Egg” on a world tour after the fair.
