Kathy Levinson, Ph.D., president of the Kiwanis Club of Manhasset & Port Washington was honored with the prestigious Brittany Fellowship for her leadership and years of community service. The award was presented by distinguished past New York Kiwanis Governor John Gridley.
The Brittany Fellowship benefits the New York Kiwanis District Pediatric Lyme Disease Foundation with medical treatment, education and funding. According to the Center for Disease Control, as many as 300,000 people in the U.S., including children, contract Lyme disease each year. The disease is transmitted by bacteria carried by the deer tick.
It can be an insidious disease affecting the central nervous system. If caught and treated early with antibiotics, the prognosis is very good. However, those who go undiagnosed can have disturbances in thinking, mood volatility, fatigue and depression. Others have died from the disease. Unfortunately most insurance companies do not pay for treatment because the costs are expensive.
Celebrating its 75th anniversary, the Kiwanis Club of Manhasset & Port Washington is part of Kiwanis International serving in over 80 countries worldwide. It is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time. The local club meets on the secnd and fourth Thursday of the month at the Port Washington Yacht Club located at One Yacht Club Drive Port Washington from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Cost for lunch is $30. All are welcome.
