Farmingdale High School Artists Meet A Master

Two Farmingdale High School art students were selected to participate in a special workshop and exhibit with the famous graphic designer, Louise Fili.

Fili is a world renowned graphic designer who has created over 2,000 book covers, numerous logos, packaging and signage for restaurants and companies around the globe. Her exhibit, “Elegantissima” was recently showcased at Farmingdale State College and featured some of her design and typography work.

Fili started out as a freelance designer before being hired as a designer by the legendary maestro of type, Herb Lubalin. A few years later, she was named the art director of Pantheon Books, which gave her the extraordinary opportunity to experiment daily with many different periods of design history. She later went on to start her own business, Louise Fili, Ltd., which enabled her to focus on the direction of everything typographic, Italian and food.

High School seniors Niamh Murphy and Alecia Russo, in Ms. Nicholas’ Advanced Placement art course, were selected to meet with Fili, because of their outstanding logo designs.

Since Fili is a typographer and designer, this was an excellent opportunity for the two young artists.

Murphy and Russo began their day meeting Fili in the gallery and had the opportunity to get a close and personal experience viewing and discussing her work. Fili lectured with examples of her lifelong pursuit of beautiful graphic design. The students then had their own work personally critiqued by the artist. This not only introduced students to the work of a famous graphic designer but also allowed students the rare experience of being a part of the professional art world for a day.
