Summer Camp At GCAC

campArts Center summers are exciting! They’re filled with fun in all aspects of the arts at The Gold Coast Arts Center’s Summer Camp.

A series of week-long programs for children ages 6 to 9 and another for ages 9 to 13 focus on ceramics, acting, theatre, drawing and painting, chess, cartooning, and song and dance including jazz, hip-hop, rap, ballet and tap. A unique feature of the camp allows children to sign up for the entire series of classes, individual sessions, or any combination of them, to fit a busy summer schedule. “We will tailor your child’s program to fit your individual needs,” said Arts Center School Director Ellen Schiff.

“In addition, registering now will save parents substantially. The more you join us, the more you save. And, there are additional savings for Arts Center members, too,” Schiff said. Ceramics Camp, offered at several two week sessions, allows students to create original works through this hands-on program. Participants will learn how to make pinch pots, coil vessels, and slab projects and ultimately glaze or paint their work. There will be a mini-exhibition of student creations at the conclusion of the program, open to family and friends.

Camp Glee enables participants to sample a variety of song and dance genres while exploring dance choreography and experience vocal training with Arts Center talented teachers. The program culminates with a “Glee Show” for family and friends.

Dance Camp is a week of activities teaching the fundamentals of hip-hop, jazz, lyrical tap, and break-dance, focusing on basic techniques and the origins of each type of dance. Students conclude their week by performing a dance to show off their accomplishments for family and friends.

Acting for Film, another weeklong session, allows campers to learn acting techniques for film. Participants will be videotaped to see their progress. Also included will be improvisation and relaxation techniques. The camp will culminate in a live performance.

Broadway Boot Camp, a two-week program, allows singers, musicians, and songwriters of all levels to explore and create their own renditions of musical and theatrical hits. Campers will experience daily classes in voice, basic music, and dance to familiarize students with performing on stage. The program concludes with a performance open to family and friends.

Drawing and painting week lets campers enjoy projects in drawing, painting, collage, and sculpture using a variety of mediums, including creating artwork from nature.

Fun with Shakespeare is the title of a week of experiencing the world of writer and dramatist William Shakespeare through acting and singing the bard’s most famous comical and tragic plays. Campers will create their own music to share their understanding of Shakespearean language, followed by a performance for family and friends.

Chess Camp, open to all levels and abilities with no prior experience required, teaches how to play or improve chess skills in and engaging and fun environment, taught by the Arts Center’s own professional chess instructor. Chess instruction is combined with other creative activities to ensure a well-balanced and multi-disciplinary week. Chess camp culminates with a life-sized chess match.

Cartooning covers basic drawing and storytelling skills, along with the creative process. Students develop cartoons from ink to color. An exhibit open to the public ends the week of study.

For the younger camper, a special half-day junior camp is available for children in pre-k through age 6, exposeing children to a wide range of art, music, and movement activities. Campers can enroll by the day, or for one or any combination of weeks up to seven, and enjoy Arts Center activities provided by its staff of professional teachers.
