The Winter Varsity Sports Season is in the books and what a great season it was. Several teams and many young athletes have distinguished themselves.
Every season the academic averages of all varsity sports teams are taken collectively and each team whose average is greater than 90 percent is honored with the Scholar/Athlete Team distinction by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA).
The girls fencing team led the pack with an impressive team average GPA of 96.901 followed closely by girls winter track with a 95.777. Boys fencing also excelled with a 95.590 average, as did boys winter track with 94.885 and girls basketball with a 94.099 average. Rounding out the field are wrestling with a 91.002 average and boys basketball with 90.673.
The Lady Baymen girls varsity basketball team, coached by head coach Sandy Rossen and assistant coaches Mary Lepore and Brian Soper, finished the season as the Nassau County Class B Champions. The wrestling team, coached by head coach Jay Davis and assistant coach Doug Axman, also finished strong by sending Cassidy Exum to the New York State Championships.
Coach John Bruckner and assistant coach Christopher Hammond consistently have the boys and girls fencers performing at the highest levels. This season is no exception as the fencers once again did exceptionally well. The boys team finished in first place in Nassau County Division 2 with a record of 11 wins and just one loss. They earned second place in the Nassau County Tournament. The girls team finished in second place in Nassau County Division 2 with a record of 11 wins and only two losses. They took fourth place in Nassau County Tournament.
Two fencers achieved All Long Island distinction. Matt Mahoski was selected as All Long Island and was number one in Saber for Nassau County. Andreas Tsoumpariotis also made All Long Island and was number two in Epee for Nassau County.
This season saw a remarkable number of All-County Fencers with twelve honorees. Leading the pack were the two All-Long Island Fencers Matt Mahoski, number one in Saber, selected to the All-County First Team and Andreas Tsoumpariotis, number two in Epee, was also selected to the All-County First Team. Laura Broffman, who was number three in Saber, Anant Mehrotra, who was number three in Saber, and Berkeley Golon, who was number three in Foil, all were selected to the All-County First Team.
Virginia Kemp, who was number seven in Foil, Grey Warwick-Clark, who was number six in Epee, and Nina Policano, who was number eight in Epee, were all selected to the All-County Second Team.
All-County Honorable Mention distinctions were given to Jason Halpern, who was number eleven in Epee, Nathalie Mejia, who was number ten in Foil, Jordan Ravins, who was number 12 in Saber, and Christina Masiakos, who was number 11 in Foil.
The Oyster Bay High School Bowling Team under the direction of Coach Tim Brady had an outstanding season. Cooper Lublin, a five-year varsity bowler and captain, just completed his senior season with a 213.3 average, his career high and good enough to finish 10th in Nassau County. Cooper also finished second in the conference in average, high game, and high three game series. In addition to reaching a personal best in “Average Game Score,” he also achieved personal bests in “High Game” at 279 and “High Series” with a 749 during a match this season. Lublin at one point had rolled 17 consecutive strikes, unfortunately for him they were sandwiched in the middle of two games, so he did not bowl the traditional 12 consecutive strikes for the “Perfect 300 Game.” Cooper competed in the Nassau County Finals at Garden City Bowl in early February as an individual and represented Oyster Bay High School well.
