Students and faculty from Syosset High School came together on March 12 to raise money for the second annual St. Baldrick’s Foundation Program. Facilitated by the varsity cheerleaders and boys basketball team, the school raised more than $5,000 to help fight childhood cancers.
With bagpipers marching in, junior Chris Louie kicked off the evening by speaking about his experience fighting sarcoma, going through chemotherapy, radiation and surgery, and thanking the Syosset community for their support. Chris is now in remission. In the days prior to the event, students sponsored one of 16 teachers who had their heads shaved by Plainview-based Unique Salon and Spa. Additional money was raised through a three-on-three basketball tournament.
St. Baldrick’s is a volunteer-driven charity committed to funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives. St. Baldrick’s coordinates its signature head-shaving events worldwide where participants collect pledges to shave their heads in solidarity with kids fighting cancer, raising money to fund research. — Syosset High School
