The Third Annual Tom Hayden Our Lady of Victory (OLV) 3-on-3 Tournament, held on Saturday, March 15, was a huge success. Eighteen teams and an army of spectators filled the OLV School gym to pay tribute to the event’s two honorees.
The first honoree, George Rettinger, spoke fondly about his years volunteering for the OLV Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) program and lovingly thanked his extended family, many of whom attended. He also spoke of how proud and honored he was to have volunteered alongside the event’s other honoree, Joe Power, who passed away several years ago.
Power’s daughter, Annie Power, representing a large turnout of the Power family, spoke beautifully about her father’s dedication to the OLV CYO program and his impact on the youth of Floral Park, many of whom attended the event to honor his memory.
Doug Hayden highlighted the amazing example both men set — for so many years and for so many players. He acknowledged, “Behind every great man is a great woman,” and presented Joan Rettinger and Alice Power with bouquets of flowers.
Willie Dersch, a product of the OLV CYO program, All-American player at Holy Cross High School and successful player for UVA, credited both honorees for playing an important role in his success, both on and off the court. Proceeds from the event will go toward the Our Lady of Victory School technology program.
The school extends its heartfelt thanks to all who participated, supported and helped plan the event. Special thanks go to the Rettinger family, the Power family, the Hayden family, event sponsors McCarthy’s Ale House and the Hance Family Foundation, as well as the organizer of the event, Chris Coyne and his committee. Generous raffle prizes donated by NOVUS Prime Properties, Archbishop Molloy High School, Kellenberg Memorial High School, Park Place Restaurant and Ray Nash were appreciated.
