The Route of the Maya

The Plainview library presents this lecture hosted by Carole and Richard Witkover at 7:30 p.m. No one knows why the highly developed Mayan civilization, which dates from 2000 B.C. in Central America, quickly collapsed into small farming villages. Come along and visit colorful cities, still showing damage from centuries-old earthquakes. Visit rural Mayan villages and climb ancient temple pyramids as you experience this multimedia travel show. Stem Cell Presentation

The Town of Oyster Bay Hadassah presents Drs. Miriam Rafailovich and Marsha Simon of Stony Brook University to this event at the Plainview-Old Bethpage Library at 7 p.m. The doctors will speak about the ongoing research on stem cells and their potential to provide cures. Long Island Rose Society

The Rose Society helps residents welcome spring with a meeting at the Plainview-Old Bethpage Library, starting at 7 p.m. Members of the society, as well as newcomers, meet to discuss the rose industry, as well as all aspects of gardening. Lecture topics include composting, soil, plant and flower diseases and much more. Society members bring roses to each meeting for display and impromptu judging against fellow members. Iris Ornig Quartet

International recording artist and composer Iris Ornig comes to the Plainview-Old Bethpage Library, 999 Old Country Rd., at 8 p.m. Along with her distinguished musicians, Orning will perform and interpret the Great American Songbook, featuring the music of Berlin, Ellington, Mercer, Porter, Rodgers & Hart and more. Book Buddies

This Plainview library program welcomes children in kindergarten through 4th grade to read along with students in 5th through 12th grade in a book buddies program. Passover Scavenger Hunt

The Mid-Island Y JCC invites attendees to go on a search for all things Passover. The Y will hold a scavenger hunt throughout the building to the music of Dayenu, Elijah, Gefilte Fish and more. It promises to be a clue-filled fun fest. After the hunt, there will be a delicious seder style treat. Books, free play and a craft will round out the day. Second Night Seder

The Manetto Hill Jewish Center, 244 Manetto Hill Rd., welcomes community members to its second night seder April 15 at 6 p.m. The RSVP deadline is April 5. For information on how to RSVP, call 516-935-5454. The event will be hosted by Rabbi David and Elissa Senter, using Haggadah B’kol Dor V’Dor. This Haggadah was designed as a contemporary Haggadah yet maintains the traditional structure of the Seder. The Haggadah features a complete guide to the Seder, phonetic transliteration, as well as a family friendly Passover story. Guests can bring their own kosher for Passover wine. The cost is $45 per adult and $25 per child 12 years old and under.

Rainbows

Join the Mid-Island Y JCC for a day celebrating sharing and friendship. Starting at 10 a.m., hosts will read Rainbow Fish, enjoy a fun-filled and colorful craft activity and spend special time with friends. Playtime and a colorful Kosher for Passover snack made by the children will be included. Attendees are asked to bring a peanut-free, Kosher for Passover lunch. Presented by Sharper Training Solutions, the Plainview-Old Bethpage Library presents this seminar at 7 p.m. for anyone wondering what a hashtag is. Attendees will learn about tweeting, posting pictures online, finding friends, following interetes and so much more. Bring computers or other devices; no fee and no registration necessary.

The Plainview-Old Bethpage Library welcomes guests to enjoy clips from Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis performances, interviews and them with guests such as Carl Reiner and Dick Van Dyke, as well as Dean Martin singing some of his best known songs. This event is part one of a series, featuring Jack Schnur. Event is April 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium.

Lions Club Meeting

Serving the Plainview-Old Bethpage and Bethpage communities since 1957, the Lions Club holds dinner meetings on the second Wednesday of every month except July and August. The Lions Club strives to make a difference in local communities and encourages residents to come in and voice their concerns.
