Students at Walt Whitman Elementary School in Syosset performed in the annual first grade play – “Hats: A Musical That Celebrates What’s Underneath” – on April 9 in front of peers, family and friends. With students donning a variety of head gear, including police, umpire and Uncle Sam hats, they took to the stage to sing, dance and recite their lines. The first-graders practiced for the performance for about a month.
The annual play, which has been a staple at the school for 25 years, always focuses on a piece that is a self-esteem booster for students. Through the rehearsal process, they learn how to work together and overcome stage fright.
