On May 15, The Community Synagogue at 160 Middle Neck Road in Port Washington will host an interfaith program organized by The Community Synagogue Brotherhood, Our Lady of Fatima Parish, St. Peter of Alcantara Parish.
A lecture will be given by Elena Procario-Foley, PhD. She is the Chair, Department of Religious Studies; Driscoll Professor of Jewish-Catholic Studies; Associate Professor of Religious Studies; Associate Editor, Horizons: The Journal of the College Theology Society at Iona College.
Overview of the Lecture:
• History of Catholic-Jewish relations since 1947.
• The importance of Judaism for Christian self-understanding.
• The continuing fostering of Catholic-Jewish relations by religious and lay leaders of both faiths.
• The rapprochement between the two faiths.
• How Europeans fought racism/anti-Semitism during the pre-war, the war and post-war years, and how their efforts helped the “birth” of Nostra Aetate at the Second Vatican Council.
