Syosset High School Team Takes Grand Prize

LIFACS

A team of students from Syosset High School – seniors Andrew Gee, Logan Kravitz and Shaina Tabak – were the grand prize winners in the Long Island Family and Consumer Sciences Challenge 2014 for their “Let Them Eat Cake” high school entry. They will be honored at a reception on May 21.

LIFACS hosts the “Let Them East Cake” challenge for middle and high school students every year, serving as a way to promote the pastry and culinary arts. Entries were judged based on creativity, representation of the theme, level of difficulty, artistic merit, execution and pictorial representation.

The students completed the project, which had a “Cat in the Hat” theme, as part of an independent study project. The project took two weeks, in addition to time spent learning about the different techniques beforehand, including baking different cakes, practicing torting and other concepts. Each student took on a different role in the project, with Shaina completing sculpting and hand-drawn art details, and Andrew and Logan baking and decorating.
