Art With A French Twist
Art history scholar Louise Cella Caruso will present a free visual art lecture “Musee d’Orsay, Paris” at 1:30 p.m. at the Garden City Public Library (GCPL) located at 60 Seventh St. Discover the unique transition from train station to art museum and its collection during this illustrated talk. The 1898 Beaux-Arts railway station Gare d’Orsay was shuttered in 1939 due to short platforms unsuitable for longer trains. Originally constructed for the Universal Exposition of 1900, it now houses the largest collection of impressionist & post-impressionist masterpieces in the world by painters including Monet, Manet, Degas, Renoir, Cézanne, Seurat, Sisley, Gauguin and Van Gogh. This public program is funded by Friends of the Garden City Public Library. Garden City residents will be given priority by presenting their GCPL card at the program room door. Non-residents will be accommodated on a space available basis 10 minutes before show time. No saved seats. Limited parking. No tickets are required. For directions, please call 516-742-8405.

Arbor Day Celebration—2014
Join members of the Civic Beautification Committee and the Locust Street School kindergarten classes as they commemorate Arbor Day with Village Arborist Michael Didyk. The celebration starts at 11:30 a.m. on the Sixth Street side of the Central Railroad Station along the back hedge, just east of the parking lot. A flowering cherry tree will be planted and the first of many new trees that will be put in throughout the village in the next few weeks by the parks division of the recreation department.

Free Mobile Legal Center
The vehicle will be stationed in the parking lot across the street from Our Lady of Loretto Church (115 Greenwich Ave., Hempstead) on 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Staff on board the mobile vehicle will provide free legal assistance on issues related to foreclosure prevention (predatory lending and loan flipping, sub-prime or non-traditional loans, and one-stop shop and loan rescue operations scams) as well as family law (domestic violence, orders of protection, contested/uncontested divorces, custody, visitation, and child/spousal support). “Every service is free, and no reservations are required,” said Senator Hannon. “I urge anyone who may need assistance with foreclosure prevention or family law to take advantage of the Mobile Legal Help Center.”

The recreation and parks department will hold a “Spring into Summer” luncheon at noon in St. Paul’s Cluett Hall. The cost of this event will be $5 and reservations are needed for this program.

Friends of the Garden City Public Library will sponsor the free visual lecture “Bob Hope & Jack Benny” presented by Sal St. George of Living History Productions on Thursday, May 29, at 1:30 p.m. at the Garden City Public Library located at 60 Seventh St. Come celebrate the careers of two American comedy icons in one laugh-filled program on what would have been Bob Hope’s 111th birthday. Comic legends Bob Hope and Jack Benny were an integral part of the 20th Century’s entertainment landscape. There were just a handful of gifted performers who adapted seamlessly to new opportunities, technologies and challenges. Hope and Benny moved effortlessly from burlesque to vaudeville to radio to television and movies thanks to the duo’s mastery of comedic timing. Yet their styles were polar opposites of one another with one common result: they were two very funny men. For more than 25 years noted playwright, comedy writer/theatrical director Sal St. George has developed unique and compelling programs that chronicle the lives of America’s greatest leaders, legends & icons. He has entertained the masses with his quick wit & stylish humor creating main stage theatrical productions as well as inventive programs for national and local clients, including museums, cultural centers, planetariums, zoos, & historic sites. Garden City residents will be given priority by presenting your Garden City Public Librar card at the program room door. The Garden City High School’s Italian Club proudly sponsors this annual banquet where attendees can come and enjoy delicious Italian food, dancing and music. Free Breast Cancer Support Groups
The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer program is offering new support groups. There is no cost for any group; however pre-registration is required. Additional groups are formed upon request, including groups for men with breast cancer and family members. All groups meet at Adelphi University School of Social Work in Garden City. Furniture Needed
The A.T.Stewart Exchange Consignment Shop at 109 Elev
enth St. in Garden City is looking for furniture to add to its inventory. The shop can use cocktail tables, end tables, consoles, chairs of all types, dressers, dining room tables, breakfronts, servers, secretaries, mirrors, etc….it’s all in demand. If you have a particularly large piece, take a picture and show it to Maryann Caterino at the shop (516-746-8900). Consignees are paid 50 percent of the selling price. The shop is conveniently located on the lower level of The Garden City Historical Society Museum. All proceeds from the A.T.Stewart Consignment Shop go towards the maintenance and upkeep of the Garden City Historical Society Museum.
Volunteers Sought For Breast Cancer Program
If you’ve had breast cancer and want to pay it forward become a hotline volunteer. Women and men who are breast cancer survivors and others who are concerned about breast health issues can become volunteers at the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program in Garden City. Volunteers can help by doing fundraising and publicity, as well as by answering hotline calls. Hotline volunteers provide emotional support, information and referral services to callers with breast health concerns. Although the program is housed on Long Island, hotline services and telephone counseling are available to callers throughout New York State.
