Farmingdale’s student artists are showcasing their creative talents as part of the district’s annual Art Show, open until May 29. Students in grades K-12 have proudly put drawings, paintings, photos, sculptures and more on display at Weldon E. Howitt Middle School.
The exhibit opened with a reception on May 13, when parents were given the opportunity to stop and admire their student’s hardwork. Fine Arts Director Rita Padden gave a brief presentation on the district’s art curriculum, and thanked parents and teachers of these art students from Northside, Albany Avenue, Woodward Parkway, Saltzman East Memorial Elementary schools, Howitt Middle School and Farmingdale High School.
Padden started by acknowledging the five students whose lives were tragically taken in a car accident on May 10. Students, families, teachers and friends observed a moment of silence in honor of the children that passed. In an effort to maintain unity and affection, Padden added, some classmates at the high school are finishing art projects started by their departed friends.
A slide show documenting their artistic journey of the students who took part in the Olympics of the Visual Arts (OVA) competition that was recently held in Saratoga Springs was also presented. The OVA participant’s outstanding creations were also put on display in the Howitt gymnasium.
As teachers and guests perused students’ work, members of the Farmingdale High School orchestra, under the direction of Howitt Middle School orchestra instructor Samuel Gelfer, gave a superb performance. Following the reception, student-artists posed with their instructors to take photos of their work.
Student artwork will continue to adorn the walls of Howitt Middle School’s lobby and hallways until the end of May. If you haven’t already done so, go witness it for yourself.
