Eagle Nurseries at 225 Jericho Tpke. is all about quality. It is owned and run by brothers Rich and Mike Scordo, who are both certified horticulturists and have been operating and running their full-service garden center for 15 years.
The Scordos started out as young kids cutting grass with their mother’s lawnmower. As middle school and high school passed, they both went on to receive their degrees in landscape design from SUNY Farmingdale.
“You can go anywhere and maybe find a bag of topsoil for a dollar cheaper, but we load your car,” said Mike.
Not only do they provide services, but Eagle also points people in the right direction in the garden. They give customers proper gardening advice from what and where to plant and what and when to apply.
“We are trying to bring in higher-end materials like quality trellises and ironwork as opposed to plastic,” Mike said. “We go with better quality for our great clientele.”
The garden center offers various types of plants including annuals, perennials, flowering trees, and ornamental plants such as fastigiate and evergreen trees. Their biggest sellers are fruit trees and privacy screeners.
“Everybody in New Hyde Park wants privacy,” Mike joked. “Nobody wants to see their neighbors apparently.”
They work on landscape design, building and maintenance. Eagle Nurseries also has crews handling full-service weekly landscaping maintenance as well.
Besides a garden center and landscape services, Eagle Nurseries offers a propane refill station, which is not very common. Most businesses can only exchange tanks. “People are able to keep their own tank here,” Mike said. “If you bring your tank, we will fill your tank up right on site.”
The garden center has something new for every holiday. Their biggest holiday is Mother’s Day, which Scordo described as their Super Bowl. It jump-starts the barbecue season as well as the planting season.
During Christmastime, they offer handmade and hand-decorated wreathes. T“Always doing business straight enabled us to get to where we are today,” Mike said. “There is absolutely education and knowledge involved. That also helps us stand out.” The garden center also does work with local schools by supplying flowers for plant sales.
For the past two years, Eagle has been hosting a Fall Festival the weekend before Halloween. This event has become increasingly popular. The festival has attractions such a petting zoo, DJ, bouncy house, popcorn and cotton candy.
