The room was buzzing with excitement at the meeting of the Port Washington Board of Education, as friends, family and fellow co-workers flooded the auditorium to witness the board grant tenure to outstanding teachers, administrators and staff members of the district.
“We are so fortunate to have these individuals in our district,” said board president Karen Sloan. “We would like to thank you for your endless devotion to our district, our students and our parents and for always being there when it matters most.”
The board unanimously approved tenure for administrators Ira Pernick, principal of Schreiber High School; Pia Sanchez, assistant principal of Weber School; as well as teachers Dawn Marie Angelin, Sara Choit, Daniel Ciccone, Lisa Cooper, Nancy Flynn, Adriana Galante, Gloria Gill, Susan Goldstein, Nora Hickey, Patrick Nash, Suzanne Potucek, Phyllis Record, and Andrea Zhu. The board also unanimously granted tenure to paraprofessional Jessica Marcoccia.
In addition, the board recognized those individuals that will be retiring from Port Washington School District at the end of the year.
“Thank you for many wonderful years of outstanding service,” said Kathleen Mooney, superintendent of schools. “We want to thank you for your constant, unwavering support.”
The board also tied up any loose budget ends as the vote for the 2014-15 budget. The budget, as it stands, is at $1.44 million, a 3.79 percent increase from the 2013-14 budget and a 1.35 percent increase on the tax cap. In addition to the budget, there are two board seats that will need to be voted on, however, the incumbents are running for additional terms and have no competitors.
The next regular meeting of the Port Washington Board of Education will take place on June 10, at 8 p.m. in the Schreiber High School auditorium.
