Actress and director Adrienne Levine, who attended Jericho High School, made a name for herself in independent films like The Unbelievable Truth and Trust. Shelly later directed and wrote the 2007 award-winning film Waitress. Levine was found dead in her Greenwich Village apartment in 2006. Her death was first thought to be a suicide but a man later confessed to murdering Levine when she caught him robbing her apartment. In honor of Levine, the Women Film Critics Circle gives an annual Adrienne Shelly Award to the film that it finds “most passionately opposes violence against women.”
