‘RED’ Shirt Friday

In a show of support for the troops, and especially those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, Our Lady of Victory School recently held “RED” Shirt Friday. The “RED” stands for (R)emember (E)veryone (D)eployed and the campaign’s inspiration was initiated by RedShirtFridays.org. Their website states that the group’s mission is to “let our servicemen and servicewomen know we support their sacrifice and that we will not forget them; we will do this by wearing red every Friday.”

OLV School’s gratitude goes out to school parent, Tom Weissler, for sharing the group’s mission.

At a school-wide assembly, where the color red abounded, students, teachers and parents listened as the third grade students shared the history and significance of Memorial Day.

Each member of the grade then held up a star as one of their classmates recited the name and rank of a member of the military who gave his life for our country, and who had called Long Island home. The entire third-grade then said a beautiful prayer asking God to hold these members of the military in His arms and care for their souls.

The filled auditorium proudly stood up and ended the ceremony with a rousing rendition of “I’m Proud to Be an American.”
