Get out your needle and thread, glue gun, beads, and paint. Creative Cups, the popular, life-affirming fund raising event of the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, is back. This is the fourth time that Creative Cups has happened on Long Island and allows artists, breast cancer survivors, their friends, family members and others to use originality and creativity to transform ordinary bras into works of art. Creative Cups celebrates the lives of those living with breast cancer and those we have lost to this terrible disease. All are invited to participate by creating an “art bra” or becoming a sponsor.
Fran Mulholland from Hicksville along with her friend Emilia Goncalves decorated a bra for last year’s Creative Cups. Their bra was themed “Celebrating Another Birthday.”
“The inspiration for this design is the “Making Strides” slogan to celebrate another birthday,” they said. “One important part of the celebration is the self esteem that each breast cancer survivor gets back as a result of breast reconstruction. As the scars slowly fade away, so does the physical reminder of what she’s been through — the upset to her life. She can reclaim her life and celebrate each new day. Here’s to many happy, healthy birthdays to every breast cancer survivor.”
Hicksville’s Samantha Bowen joined with her ETA pledge class of Delta Sigma Pi to design a bra. Their bra is a reminder as to why they fight to find the cure.
“The colors we chose as well as the red rose are apart of our brotherhood. As a pledge class we created our motto to ‘Always Aim High.’ The purple feathers decorated around the bra express just that,” they said. “We want to accomplish what others couldn’t, and keep our spirits soaring high. A lot of birds have many different meanings. Ravens, for example are a symbol of fate. Fate brought us together as a pledge class and from there we want to achieve higher then others accomplishments. This bra is important to us because it symbolizes how many women we know fighting this battle, how strong and beautiful they truly are. The beads, and small flowers are there to show womanhood and the essence of its real beauty. The ETA pledge class is determined and won’t stop fighting along side their loved ones until there is a cure to end breast cancer.”
Submitted creations must be received by Oct. 15, to be included in the auction/gala (to be held on March 19, 2015 at Adelphi University in Garden City, NY).
