Port Washington’s Manhasset Bay Yacht Club will host the 32nd Knickerbocker Cup, or K-Cup, Race, which will include three of the top-10 world-ranked match racing skippers.
The racing competition will be preceded by an opening ceremony and welcome cocktail party, followed by an All-American BBQ Wednesday, Aug. 27 at 6:30 p.m.
Racing begins Thursday morning, Aug. 28, and will continue through Aug. 31. Proceeds will be shared jointly between the Knickerbocker Cup Foundation and St. Francis Hospital Foundation.
Denmark’s seventh-ranked defending champion, Nicolai Sehested, will be challenged by France’s eighth-ranked Pierre-Anton Movan, and Switzerland’s ninth-ranked Eric Monnin.
For Sehested and Monnin, reaching the finals would be a repeat of last year. However, they will be participating against top-ranked American skippers who are determined to sail off with a win for the home country.
Racing on Thursday morning will begin with a round robin (each skipper races against every other skipper) and continue with quarterfinals, semifinals and finals. Spectator boats will be available on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Reservations for spectator boats are required in advance of the event.
Official sponsors of the 2014 Knickerbocker Cup include Knickerbocker Bay Club, Investors Bank, Americana, and Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty.
