Last week was one of Oyster Bay’s biggest, most anticipated summer events, the Italian American Society’s St. Rocco’s Festival. Returning to its usually spot in Fireman’s Field on Shore Avenue, the festival was filled with amusement rides, live music, and great food and company.
“We come every year to St. Rocco’s with friends,” said Laura Regan of East Norwich. “The rides and awesome food make it a lot of fun.”
St. Rocco’s is a fundraiser that follows the traditions of the Italian-American Mutual Aid Society in 1910, who raised money in order to support single immigrants who needed aid. St. Dominic’s R.C.C. took over running the festival in 1960, but the Oyster Bay Italian American Society took the reins in 2010, using it to raise money for local scholarships and the society’s various food and toys drives.
The five-day festival was a great way for families to come and enjoy the beautiful summer nights with games, rides, food and raffles. For people who come every year, and even people new to the St. Rocco’s Festival, it is a great night.
“This is my first time here,” said Rachel Smith of West Islip. “Everyone is having a great time. There’s something to do for everyone.”
The famous St. Rocco’s Festival’s zeppole also made an appearance. The festival’s zeppole are a big attraction for many Oyster Bay residents since they are only available at the festival.
“I enjoy the zeppole,” said Brooke Regan. “Everyone always talks about them even when St. Rocco’s isn’t around. There’s nothing like them.”
The St. Rocco’s Festival ran from July 9 to July 13 and was greeted with beautiful weather every evening. The Italian American Society can celebrate another successful festival, which amused thousands of people this year.
