Grillin’ Burgers With A Smash

Dedicating itself to brining freshly made burgers to its customers, Smashburger in New Hyde Park provides gourmet hamburgers, but with a twist.

Since its grand opening on Oct. 18, 2013, business at Smashburger has been a smash, says owner Irwin Kruger.

“The location has been great for us,” added Kruger. “We have good tenants that surround us. It’s conveniently located on Marcus Avenue, and there’s plenty of parking.”

Workers form the beef into meatballs, place them on a hot grill and sear the meat for ten seconds, using a specialized tool to flatten the patty, which sears juices into the burger.

“It really locks in all the juices and we get a wonderful caramelized crust that really brings out great flavors in the hamburger,” said Kruger.

The Smashburger staff cleans up all the trays and cups for its customers; something customer Joe Pellegrino raves about.

Pellegrino is a frequent patron of Smashburger, saying he has eaten at the establishment 20 times. He typically orders the Classic Smash, made with American cheese, Smash sauce, ketchup, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and onion on an egg bun.

Pellegrino likes coming here because the eatery caters to the customer.

“The service is great,” he said. “They come over and they cater to your needs. It’s nice.”

Smashburger is a “fast-casual” restaurant, meaning that it does not offer full-table service, but provides a better quality of food than a fast-food place.

“Workers cook, prepare the food and deliver it to the table in a six-minute time-frame,” said Kruger.

Smashburger offers hamburgers and grilled chicken sandwiches that come on four different types of buns. Customers have a choice of choosing between an egg bun, a spicy chipotle bun, a brioche bun, and a multi-grain bun.

“I think that we have the best variety and best selection of hamburgers,” said Kruger.

This burger joint provides seven different cheese options, as well as a selection of burger toppings that include applewood smoked bacon, fried egg, avocado, guacamole, and sautéed portobello mushrooms.

A soon-to-be new addition to the Smashburger menu will be hot dogs, which Kruger expects to be a popular item. Customers can choose between a chili cheese dog, a classic dog, and a Long Island dog, which is topped with sauerkraut, grilled onions and mustard.

The next step for Smashburger in New Hyde Park will be implementing online ordering for its customers, which will make the ordering process that much easier. All customers need to do is to visit Smashburger.com to place their order.

Smashburger,  a Denver-based company, and first opened in Glendale, Colorado back in 2007.  There are about 270 stores in the United States, and also operates internationally with stores in Canada, South America, and Kuwait.

Kruger plans to open up more franchises across Long Island. He is currently waiting on plans to begin to open up a Smashburger in Lindenhurst, and is also looking at locations in East Northport, Smith Haven and Queens.
