Floral Park Recreation Center Notes

The major event of the summer will be the 32nd Annual Awards Ceremony which traditionally honors campers for outstanding play in the 10 major camps. This year’s ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 21, at 7:30 p.m. by the new stage area.

Winning individuals and teams will be presented with medals and trophies. More than 200 individual awards, as well as a souvenir for every camper, will be part of the evening’s festivities.

The “highlight” of the evening will be the presentation of the “Camper of the Summer” award to the outstanding boy and girl participants. Refreshments will follow the ceremony.

Sports campers this week have been competing in girls’ soccer and boys’ volleyball. There are a total of four divisions, two levels and more than 100 girls and boys enthusiastically competing for the final championships of the season.

Junior finals for volleyball and soccer are at 9:20 a.m. and the senior championship contests will be held at 10:50 a.m. Parents are cordially invited to the finals.

The girls soccer campers for Week 7 were Mia Savignano, Tara Tam and Katherine Stewart.

More than 75 junior and senior boys have enjoyed drills and games during the past week of volleyball camp. Outstanding junior players are Chris Blatz, Tyler Foy, Jordan DeClemente, Dylan Plante, Steven Tursi and Mark Goldberg. The final Championship Thursday of the summer will be on Thursday, Aug. 21. The junior championships is at 9:35 a.m. and senior finals at 10:50 a.m.

The final week of the Recreation Department’s sponsored offerings features many exciting events for the nearly 2,000 youth and adults who participated in the Summer 2014 Programs.

Adult volleyball and basketball were completed this past week.

In the women’s divisions winning teams were: Poppy’s Place (competitive), Wolverines (intermediate) and Kissing Aces (Recreational). In men’s competitive volleyball, Into the Woods, in an exciting four-set match bested Con-Kel. The Brewers were winners in the Intermediate division and Arps captured the Recreational division title. All final championship winners will be listed on the official village website (www.fpvillage.org).

Registration for the 2014 Jim Krug Fall Tennis Classic is on going. Preliminary rounds begin on the weekend of Sept. 6 and Sept. 7. The registration fee is $25 for one division and $5 for each additional division, the 2014-15 VFP resident leisure pass or the 2014 VFP resident pool pass is required for registration.

Although the adult summer season came to a rousing championship conclusion on Aug. 12, teams and players interested in continuing the volleyball season will have an opportunity to do so this coming fall. Currently there are plans in place for the Recreation Department to have a six week fall season. Depending on the number of registered teams, each team would play a minimum of three matches per week.

The fall adult night volleyball program would commence in early September and conclude in mid-October. Interested team captains should call the playground (516-326-6335) for complete details.

Employees of Week 6 were Brian Moriarty and Gigi Karlovic.
