Manhasset Boy Scouts closed their summer activities with a trip to Camp Aquehonga in Narrowsburg, NY the first week of August.
Fourteen Plandome Troop 71 Scouts and a Scout guest from Troop 97 collectively took home over 50 merit badges including forestry, mammal study, personal fitness, canoeing, basketry, camping, rife shooting, communications, cooking, life saving, search and rescue, archaeology and woodcarving.
Scouts enjoyed the early morning “polar bear” swim and afternoon open swim at the camp’s aquatic center complete with a three-story twisting slide, built huge campfires, rappelled off Indian Cliffs, scaled the two-story climbing course, split and chopped wood, lashed together downed trees into a 20-foot high H-frame camp entrance and 16-foot tripod climbing tower on their site, cooked their own meals, conducted a flag retirement ceremony and entertained the entire camp with an original tune at the closing campfire.
An exhausting but fun time was had by all. Learn more about Troop 71 at www.plandometroop71.com.
