Celebrating End of Summer At The Life Enrichment Center

We are happy to report that we successfully met our goals for this summer of expanding programs, adding local trips and meeting new friends.

Center Members enjoyed a day at CitiField compliments of the New York Mets. Accommodations were made to make the day special and Center members gratefully anticipate being invited again next year! Let’s go Mets!

A visit to the Christian Fellowship House in Syosset introduced members to Florence Steffens, the family matriarch who, along with her husband Rev. Paul, opened the adult home as a

“Bed and Breakfast” for seniors in 1962. Their children and grandchildren continue to manage the facility. Members were also introduced to Ileen Kessler, LCSW-R, founder of the

Holistic Healing With Horses program which is offered at the Fellowship ranch. Ms. Kessler spoke about the therapeutic benefits of the program that centers around interacting with horses.

The Oyster Bay Historical Society shared their presentation of Civil War artifacts with the seniors. A wide array of items including letters from soldiers during battle led an interesting discussion on Oyster Bay’s involvement in the war.

Members and staff ended the summer by commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Beatles with a “British Invasion” End of Summer Party. The main hall was fully decked out in

fantastic British and musical themed decorations provided by Senior Advisory Board Vice President Diane Aerne and Volunteer of the Year Mimi Treacy, along with the help of a team of volunteers. Performances by the center’s Line Dancers, led by instructor Kathy Pagano, got the party started with Beatles’ tunes. The Line Dancers’ costumes of brightly colored tie-dyed t-shirts, complete with fringes, were created by art teacher and dancer Sharon Collins. Tai Chi instructor Spencer Gee surprised the crowd with his “Dancing with the Stars” performance. Unknown to most, Spencer is an award winning ball room dancer!

Many thanks to our great staff, volunteers and friends for their hard work and commitment to the center. We especially thank our members for sharing their time with us and for supporting our center.
