Charlie Chaplin: Birth of the “Tramp”—The Mutual Years
2014 marks the centennial of not only Charles Chaplin’s first appearance on screen, but also the creation of his “Tramp” character. Film historian Philip Harwood will focus on one of Chaplin’s most creative periods: his years at Mutual Studios, 1916-1917. View four two-reel comedies directed by, and starring Charles Chaplin: The Rink, The Pawnshop, The Floorwalker (all 1916), and The Immigrant (1917). Movie At The Library
See The Fault in Our Stars at the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Library, 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Hazel and Gus are two extraordinary teenagers who share an acerbic wit, a disdain for the conventional, and a love that sweeps them on an unforgettable journey. “How to Get Into (and Pay Discounted Prices For) the Best Colleges in the U.S.” 7 p.m. at the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Library. Andrew Lockwood, a college finance and admissions strategist and author, will be here to conduct a workshop for the parents of college-bound teens. Topics covered include: how a private college can actually cost less than a state university, how parents earning six-figure incomes can get five-figure aid packages, the six biggest myths about grants, scholarships, and financial aid, how to increase a “final” financial aid award, 11th hour fixes if you got the wrong advice about how to save for college, and much more. You’ve been shopping on eBay and now you’re ready to sell. How do you set up an eBay seller’s account? How do you describe your items? How much will it cost? How do you get a picture online? On Thursday, October 9, at 7 pm, George Krzyminski, Westhampton bookstore owner, will visit the Oyster Bay Historical Society’s Koenig Center, 20 Summit Street to discuss best practices for collecting manuscripts and other historical materials.
