Movie: The Book Thief

The Plainview library presents two showings, 3 and 7:30 p.m., of The Book Thief. While subjected to the horrors of World War II, young Liesel (Sophie Nelisse) finds solace by stealing books and sharing them with others, while her adoptive parents hide a Jewish refugee in their basement.

Cat Film Festival

On Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 7:30 p,m., hosts Mike Keegan and Jay Wertzler will squeeze all of the trappings of a tony two-week film festival into a tabby two-hour CAT-tacular at Huntington’s Cinema Arts Centre. There’ll be more cats than you can shake a cat at. World Purr-Mieres? Check. Retrospectives? Check.

Established in 2014, The First (and Probably Last) Annual Feline Film and Video Festival for Humans has all of the elements of the world’s most prestigious film festivals, but with one distinct advantage over its predecessors: the Cinema Arts Centre shows cat videos. $10 Members / $15 Public. Pumpkins Against Breast Cancer

In cooperation with the First Company Pink, the Got Checked Organization and Bzarry Events, Inc.., Nassau County will host its first annual Pink Pumpkin Patch on Wednesday, Oct. 8 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building, 1550 Franklin Ave., Mineola. All proceeds will go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Get there early and bring your family and friends for the pink pumpkin patch – where all pumpkins will be painted pink and bedazzled in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Refreshments and treats will be served including coffee from Starbucks and sweets from The Chocolate Duck. At 7 p.m. the dome will be lit with pink lights for the cause. Book Buddies

In this teen program, volunteers in grades five through 12 will read to children in kindergarten through fourth grade. Event is from 2 to 2:45 p.m. in downstairs meeting rooms A and B at the Plainview library.


Friday, Oct. 12

Buddy Game Day

The Plainview library hosts this program for teens. In Buddy Game Day, children in kindergarten through fourth grade will have a fun afternoon playing board games with volunteers in grades five through 12. Refreshments will be served. Program is in the downstairs meeting rooms A and B.


Wednesday, Oct. 15

Long Term Care

Long term care specialists Natalie Karp and Rona Loshak visit the Plainview library to provide an overview of how long term care insurance works. They will also update attendees on recent changes that will help plans for long term goals. Event takes place in the auditorium at 7:30 p.m.


Saturday, Oct. 18

Love, Loss And What I Wore

Lantern Theatre visits the Plainview library and presents Love, Loss and What I Wore by Nora and Delia Ephron, the off-Broadway hit that uses clothing, accessories and the memories they trigger to tell funny and often poignant stories that all women can relate to. Whether you are a male or female, you’ll have a lighthearted and enjoyable evening. The play will be presented in a reader’s theater format, using scripts on stage. Play takes place at 8 p.m. in the auditorium.

Annual Crystal Ball Gala

The Hospice Care Network will host its 21st Annual Crystal Ball Gala featuring Casablanca Night at the Glen Head Country Club on Friday, Nov. 14 from 7 p.m. to midnight. Frank J. Sciame, Jr., president and CEO of F.J. Sciame Construction Co., will be the honoree and recipient of the George W. Frank Chairman’s Award. He founded Sciame Construction in 1975, leading the firm to its current position as one of the tri-state’s (NY-NJ-CT) leading construction management firms, with current projects underway valued at over one billion dollars.

Guests will enjoy an extended cocktail hour, passed hors d’oeuvres with gourmet food stations, open bar, strolling dinner small plates, dessert displays, entertainment, music, dancing and silent auction.  Tickets are $350 each and sponsorships begin at $150. Lions Club Meeting

Serving the Plainview-Old Bethpage and Bethpage communities since, the Lions Club holds dinner meetings on the second Wednesday of every month except July and August. The Lions Club strives to make a difference in local communities and encourages residents to come in and voice their concerns.
