Despite the rainy weather, approximately 65 people turned out for an unusual art fundraiser held on Centre Island for the benefit of Oakcliff Sailing Center last month.
The event started with guests boarding a boat in Oyster Bay Marine Center for the scenic ride over to the home of Betsy and Hunt Lawrence on the south side of Centre Island. Here, spread throughout their home, their 1906 restored Cypress wood greenhouse and their 4.5 acres were nearly 40 pieces of art for sale. Visitors were given a “treasure map” of the grounds that highlighted the art amongst it.
It was pointed out on the guide that the property was special because of the careful restoration of the pond and meadows that once were here. Visitors were able to stroll the grounds with a glass of wine, snacks and loaned umbrellas while viewing the art. The Meadow Walk raised approximately $10,000 for Oakcliff Sailing through the admission fee and proceeds, 20 percent of which were donated from the art sale.
For those that missed the Meadow Walk, another art event will be held in March. People interested in sailing should note that there will be a regatta Nov. 1 and 2, and visitors are welcome to come out and watch from an umpire boat or volunteer and help.
