On Monday Oct. 13, 2014 at 7:30 p.m., the Temple Sinai Social Club of Roslyn invites the community to a Sukkah Social. Come and eat, schmooze and laugh along with seasoned stand-up comedian Mark Brier.
This humorous program filled with clean, rib-tickling jokes, anecdotes and terrific impressions is sure to make you smile. Brier has been performing for over 35 years on cruise ships, at resorts, comedy clubs and conventions. Brier has engaged audiences in more than 70 New York State libraries.
His work includes impressions of popular entertainers like Jack Benny, Jackie Mason, Rodney Dangerfield and Ed Sullivan. Leave your worries at home and come to Temple Sinai for some comic relief. All are welcome and will leave laughing. Refreshments will be served and weather permitting, the event will take place in the Temple’s sukkah. The event is free to Temple Sinai and Social Club members. Non-member suggested contribution: $5.
On Tuesday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m., Temple Sinai will host a transformative musical performance by young adults who are recovering from substance abuse and addiction.
Using song, dance, tears and laughter, “Freedom Song” helps shatter the myth that Jews are immune to addiction. The cast is composed not of actors, but of former addicts who share their stories of how they broke free from the chains of addiction. The play, which has been called the Jewish Rent, interweaves a Passover Seder and personal stories that are told at an AA meeting.
Rabbi Mark Borovitz, the spiritual leader of Beit T’Shuvah, a residential recovery program and a haven for spiritual growth and healing in Los Angeles, will lead a powerful post show discussion.
The performers in Freedom Song, who are members of Beit T’Shuvah, will also participate in the discussion. Rabbi Borovitz is a former con man whose challenges with drinking led him to a life of crime. During his time in prison, he transformed himself and later became a rabbi. He is the author of the popular book, The Holy Thief: A Con Man’s Journey from Darkness to Light.
Temple Sinai welcomes the community to this very important program. It is time to break the silence regarding addiction in the Jewish community. Come and hear these stories, ask questions, and transform your own understanding of addiction. All teenagers and anyone in the community who is interested, are encouraged to attend.
This program is free to Temple Sinai members and $10 for non-members.
