This Saturday, Oct. 25, the 7th Annual Tom Zangas Memorial Lung Cancer Foundation/Archangel Michael 5K/1K Run/Walk will take place at 9 a.m., at Christopher Morley Park.
The race, which attracted 200 participants last year, honors the memory and fight for life of Tom Zangas, a triathlete and marathoner who died from lung cancer in 2011 at 40. Proceeds from the race go to the foundation, in its work to fund research for the prevention of lung cancer and the spread of the disease, and to The Archangel Michael Church of Port Washington. Last year more than $60,000 was raised.
The Tom Zangas Memorial Lung Cancer Foundation was founded by Tom’s parents, Leonard and Penelope Zangas, to honor Tom’s memory and raise funds to fight lung cancer.
Earlier this year, the proceeds raised by the foundation were selected to fund research at Yale University to understand how aggressive cancer cells develop the dreadful disease in normal lungs and then spread to other vital organs. The focus of the grant will be to investigate new therapeutic solutions to block this process with the goal of developing new treatments to eliminate (for advanced stage) or prevent (for early stage) the spread of lung cancer.
