A warm fall day greeted spectators, students and administrators at Floral Park Memorial High School’s annual homecoming parade and football game on Oct. 18.
The parade kicked off at the school and wound through town with school’s mascot, the Floral Park Knight, and school administrators leading the way, followed by cheerleaders, the kickline team and members of the student classes and the color guard, all stepping in tune with the high school’s marching band. The homecoming court’s Ladies and Lords rode in convertible cars as they waved to the crowd.
Floats decorated with SpongeBob Square Pants and the Flintstones reflected the school’s homecoming cartoon theme. The parade ended at the high school and the Floral Park Memorial Knights football team then took the field to play the South Side High School Cyclones.
The cheerleading team and kickline team, the Florettes, performed at halftime, along with a special performance of the marching band and color guard. A carnival was staged outside of the school with activities for all to enjoy.
The Homecoming court was announced at halftime with Jasmine Nunez and Jake Montanaro being crowned Homecoming Queen and King, respectively.
The Knights did not disappoint and came back from a 13-point deficit before the half, which led to a 20 to 19 win. Floral Park’s defense came up big, forcing a wide extra point, which gave the home crowd a thrill.
“The team was excited to win,” said Knights Head Coach Michael Spina. “We’ve had some close games this year. This one ended very well.”
